Pet cremation in Hong Kong: a calm guide for a hard day

Nobody researches this in advance. So the decisions get made in the vet's waiting room, in twenty minutes, at the hardest moment — and some of them can't be undone.

This guide is here so that, if the day comes, you already know your options and can spend those minutes saying goodbye instead of making phone calls. Reading it now, calmly, is a kindness to your future self.

Your three options, side by side

Roughly HK$1,500–5,000+, by weight

  • –Your pet is cremated alone — the ashes returned are theirs
  • –Most providers let you attend or watch the cremation
  • –Urns, paw prints and fur keepsakes usually offered
  • –Book directly or ask your vet to arrange it

What happens at the vet

If your pet passes at a clinic, the vet will ask what you'd like to do. You do not have to decide on the spot — clinics can hold your pet for a day or two while you choose. Most clinics work with one or two cremation providers and can arrange everything, or you can book a provider directly, which usually costs less and gives you more choice over the ceremony.

If your pet passes at home

  • –Call a cremation provider or your regular vet — many providers offer 24-hour collection from your home.
  • –Wrap your pet in a towel and keep them somewhere cool until collection.
  • –Do not place a pet's body in household refuse — it is an offence in Hong Kong, apart from being a hard memory to carry.

One piece of admin, then it's done

If your dog was licensed, notify the AFCD so the licence record tied to the microchip is closed — otherwise renewal reminders keep arriving. It's the same counter transaction described in our dog licence guide, and it can wait until you're ready.

Questions worth asking a provider

  • –Is the cremation genuinely individual, and can I attend?
  • –How is the price calculated — by weight, and what's included?
  • –How long until the ashes are returned?
  • –Do you collect from home or from my vet, and at what hours?

Afterwards

Grief for a pet is real grief. Hong Kong has pet loss support groups, and some cremation providers offer memorial rooms and counselling referrals. There is no correct timeline, and no rush to decide what to do with the ashes — many owners keep them at home for months before choosing.
